What is 1st Saturdays?
Service day events i.e. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day have played a vital role in bringing communities together and the development of many green projects i.e. school gardens. But, service days often times lack the continuity of community participation to keep these projects alive. In other words, what happens three months later to that school garden that was started on Dr. King Day? Unless someone is taking care of it, it will die. 1stSaturday’s main function is to keep the community engaged with the garden they built on Dr. King Day.
1st Saturdays serves two main purposes. 1) we help connect individuals to organizations/schools who are starting a 1stSaturdays in their community. 2) We assist these organizations with marketing their volunteer event through the 1st Saturday’s building Healthy Economics network.
The name 1st Saturdays is used to remind all generations to volunteer once a month (the first Saturday of the month) to improve upon the projects they started.
